What we are about

Is your child a crafter who loves to make things with their hands? A busy little person who has little time for creativity between school and sports? You've come to the right place! NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!

In the heart of Heber, the Finishing School offers progressively structured classes and a positive learning environment to create opportunities for your child to try new things and build self-confidence with a grin that stretches from ear to ear. Our instructors provide a nurturing environment through sewing classes for beginner and intermediate levels. Sewing each day, keeps the crazy away!

An innovative, creative, smart seamstress, Sue Hess Fenton envisioned a nurturing place for children to learn homemaking skills of sewing and cooking. She opened the first Finishing School Salt Lake in 1982 in Millcreek, Utah and created a wonderful shop with a non-competitive, positive spirit. Sue developed a flourishing business that was sold when she retired in 2019. It is still running today in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Decades later, her granddaughter, Madison Banks, is now opening another location, Finishing School Heber, to continue on her legacy and focus on sewing. Madison took lessons all throughout her childhood and helped her grandmother run Finishing School Salt Lake as a teenager. Later, Madison ran Finishing School Falls Church in Northern Virginia for nearly ten years until she moved back to Utah in 2023. Madison now resides in Millcreek with her husband, 1 year old son, bulldog, and pit-bull.

Classes are offered year-round for children ages 8-15. Hour-long lessons are available weekdays after school and on Saturday mornings. Lessons are in a group setting and personalized depending on the child's personal preferences and skill sets. They are appropriate for every child, and all are welcome here. You can buy a tuition package and sign up for lessons as often as you wish. All supplies and fabric are included - you don't need to bring anything except a positive attitude and an open mind.

Students learn a variety of skills: ironing, hand sewing, machine sewing, pattern layout, fabric cutting, serging, pattern making, sewing buttons, appliques, zippers, altering clothing, hemming, patchwork and more. Projects change each season so kids can return again and again to continue building their sewing skills. Ready, set, sew!

Projects include: shorts, pajamas, sweatshirts, aprons, oven mitts, dresses, skirts, bath robes, purses, holiday decorations, stuffed animals, pillows, quilts, hats, and more!
